If you are receiving an error that there is not enough room on the timeline to add the sound, then you will need to make room on the timeline by removing sounds or increasing the duration/time that a frame, or frames, will be shown. If you are trying to add a sound to a scene, then you may need to increase the duration for several frames in the scene or split the scene.
If you are receiving an error that some sound formats can't be played and you are on Windows, then you may have an issue with QuickTime as described here.
